The notorious drug lord from Burma's Shan state laid down his arms last year, ending a long war with the military rulers in Rangoon. What is Khun Sa's role today: is he working for SLORC or fighting for the independence of the Shan state in the north-east region which borders Thailand, Laos and China? Since his surrender, the Burmese army has occupied the Shan state, driving 100,000 refugees into Thailand as well as launching attacks on the Karenni and Wa ethnic groups.
